El Paso Museum of History adds new “Comfort zone” for nursing mothers

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso Museum of History launched a private breastfeeding space called “the comfort zone”.

This new specialized area makes it the first local museum to offer a lactation station.

"This is very important for the community because we need to have more accessible amenities," said Erica Marin, El Paso Museum of History Director.

The EPHM has joined a growing number of Texas organizations, by becoming designated as a breastfeeding-friendly worksite and public space.

This is in collaboration with the American Heart Association's REACH program, where we were asked if we were interested in maybe creating a space for individuals to feed their children and to also, you know, have a space for mothers to have some privacy," said Marin.

The new space is one of many initiatives the museum is working on to be accessible and welcoming to all visitors.

"We also have, of course, different places where people can sit. If you want to sit on a rocking chair or if you want to sit in a straight chair if you want to sit on a little couch. The best way that you want to take care of your child. We also have a changing table and a refrigerator to hold milk," said Marin.

The program at EPMH is just the start, Marin says there are plans to include spaces like this one in other area museums.
