‘Basketball in the Barrio’ holds 31st annual camp

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- 'Basketball in the Barrio' is returning with their summer camp for the 31st year in a row in El Paso.

The camp hosts 6-10 year-old girls and boys who live in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio and Chamizal neighborhoods. According to the camp, they emphasize "border culture pride," and is made possible from a "generous" grant from Household Furniture.

Shawn Harrington, a former New Mexico State University point guard, is this year's special guest at the camp. Previous guests have included NBA star Greg Foster, boxing champ Juan Lazcano, Coach Nolan Richardson, NFLPA’s director David Meggyesy, Olympian John Carlos, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and poet Benjamin Saenz.

Steve Yellen, founder of 'Basketball in the Barrio,' says the camp was inspired by El Paso legend Rocky Galarza, the late boxing trainer who "dedicated his life to training El Paso kids for free."

In between basketball training for the kids, musicians, storytellers, dancers, and artists will present their work.

It takes place this weekend, June 9th through 11th at Armijo Center, 700 East Seventh Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
