Local firm donates $50,000 to TTUHSC to improve dental care access for El Pasoans

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Pasoans could have better access to dental care in the near future, after an El Paso-based financial planning firm donated $50,000 to the Hunt School of Medicine's Dean's Excellence Fund.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center said the donation from Ethos Financial will support students' education. This comes during a national critical provider shortage, which the university says affects dental care access to El Pasoans most in need.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, over 63 million Americans lived in 'Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas' in 2021, including El Paso County.

TTUHSC says the cost of medical school contributes to the shortage, with most dental schools costing 40% more than medical schools.

“The continued support from Ethos Financial is instrumental in advancing our mission,” said Richard C. Black, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine. “This gift not only benefits our dental students by enriching their training but also directly impacts our Borderplex community by fostering enhanced dental care access. As we prepare the next generation of dental professionals, such partnerships are vital in addressing the unique needs of our region.”
