Garland says he won’t let the Justice Department be used as a political weapon

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Merrick Garland says he won’t allow the Justice Department “to be used as a political weapon.” And he’s denouncing what he calls “conspiracy theories and “dangerous falsehoods” that are targeting federal law enforcement. Garland spoke to U.S. attorneys and other department employees who gathered at the department’s headquarters in Washington on Thursday. Garland forcefully defended the department’s integrity and impartiality against claims of politicization by Republicans. In a statement responding to Garland’s speech, Trump’s campaign called the criminal charges against the former president “phony,” and said Garland has done “tremendous damage to a once great institution.”
