They have sunk to a low ebb following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attacks and Israel’s powerful military campaign against its enemies in its region. The conflict has led to untold death and destruction and sent U.N. and other humanitarians scrambling to limit the fallout on civilians. Here’s a look at what the world body has been able to achieve, and what it hasn’t, over the last year and how it and Israel have had intertwined destinies since both were born in the 1940s.
