Deadline to protest your property appraisal is nearing
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)- Homeowners have until May 15 or 30 days from the date they received their appraisal to file a protest.
The amount that your home is valued determines how much you pay in property taxes, if you don't agree with the number that you receive from the appraisal district you can protest. Which the appraisal district highly encourages.
CAD suggests you bring any evidence you have to protest your property's value.
Make sure all homestead exemptions are in place, take printed photos of problems with the home, bring estimates of how much repairs would cost, and compare your neighbor's property appraisal.
"Nobody knows your home better than you do. That's just a fact. Know nobody knows about the water heater that's leaking. They don't know about the sinks that are always busted and the toilets that are always creaking, and the floors that are just, you know, terrible," said W. Jared Abbott, a property tax consultant with Kingswood PTA.
Protest forms are provided in your mailed appraisal letter. Printed forms can be dropped off at the CAD office or mailed to 5801 Trowbridge Dr. 79925, faxed to (915) 780-2130, they can also be emailed to admin@epcad.org.
In an informal appraisal, a CAD appraiser will go over the evidence and make a determination whether to adjust the value of your home.
In the formal appraisal, the CAD’s Appraisal Review Board will determine the outcome. Appointments can be held in person, by phone or online.
