Las Cruces mom arrested after 3-year-old daughter tests positive for meth
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A Las Cruces woman was arrested after her 3-year-old daughter tested positive for methamphetamine, police said Friday.
Magaly Margarit Luna, 29, was being held without bond in the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a felony charge of negligent child abuse, although police indicated additional charges may be filed.
The abuse charge stems from a December welfare check on the toddler by officials with the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department. During that visit, police said Luna admitted using meth at her home, which in turn prompted CYFD to have the young girl tested.
Investigators said Luna repeatedly failed to show up for meetings with CYFD officials after the girl's test results came back positive. As a result, authorities obtained a warrant for her arrest and Luna was taken into custody on Thursday by police.
