LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A teenager was shot and wounded Monday night at a Las Cruces community center and police continued searching Tuesday for his attacker.

The shooting took place about 9 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Henry Benavidez Center at 1045 McClure Road.

Officers said the victim was conscious and talking with them after the shooting took place, but they had yet to figure out what led up to the attack - which was initially reported as a stabbing.

The 17-year-old boy, who suffered a gunshot wound to the back, was flown to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment. Authorities said Tuesday that his injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening.

Police said no arrests had been made and there were no immediate suspects in the shooting.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the community center shooting to call Las Cruces police at (575) 526-0795.
