SWAT standoff in central El Paso ends as wanted man surrenders while carrying baby
EL PASO, Texas -- A SWAT standoff with a wanted fugitive believed to be armed and barricaded in central El Paso ended with the man walking out of an apartment carrying a baby and surrendering to police.
That peaceful surrender happened a bit before 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 3300 block of Gateway East, according to officers.
On Wednesday, police said they charged 26–year-old Andy Galindo with several weapons violations. The convicted felon was being held on nearly $9,000 bond in the downtown jail.
Tuesday night's standoff occurred after police gang unit officers went to arrest Galindo on a warrant charging him with a shooting incident that occurred on N. Zaragosa Street back in early June.
Officers shut down the stretch of Gateway East around 8:30 p.m. when the standoff began unfolding and urged the public to avoid the area out of safety concerns.
Police said Galindo held officers at bay for several hours before he finally exited the apartment with the baby, a woman and some other children. He was then "taken into custody without further incident."
