Arrest made in Las Cruces murder that happened year ago this week
UPDATE, Dec. 9, 2021: An arrest has been made in the murder of Ronnie Benavidez, who was found dead of gunshot wounds inside a Las Cruces home one year ago on this week.
Las Cruces police on Wednesday arrested Jacob Pena and accused him of shooting Benavidez at 2350 Rosedale Drive on Dec. 8, 2020.
According to the court documents, a witness said Benavidez was at the home with Pena hanging out; Benavidez became upset and got into a physical altercation with Pena and that's when police said shots were fired.
Pena's DNA was found on the gun that was used, according to the court documents which officially charged him with one count of second degree murder.
UPDATE, Dec. 9, 2020: Police on Wednesday identified the shooting victim as 33-year-old Ronnie Benavidez of Las Cruces.
Authorities said the investigation into his killing continued with no arrests yet made in the case.
ORIGINAL REPORT, Dec. 8, 2020: LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- Police on Tuesday were investigating the overnight shooting death of a 33-year-old man at a Las Cruces home.
That shooting happened in a house along the 2300 block of Rosedale Drive shortly after midnight.
Investigators said they were interviewing two men and a woman who were also said to have been inside the home at the time officers arrived.
There was no word of any arrests as yet.
