Teen charged in drive-by shooting that sent El Paso school kids running for cover

UPDATE, June 9: An El Paso teenager has been arrested and charged in a drive-by shooting earlier this month that police said resulted in children at a nearby elementary school running for cover as the gunfire rang out.

19–year-old Jesus Soto was booked into the downtown jail on two counts of deadly conduct and was being held on $500,000 bond, police announced Wednesday.

Police gang unit investigators accuse Soto of firing multiple rounds into a home at 3813 Johnson Avenue in central El Paso on June 3 as he targeted two teens inside; neither was struck by the gunfire, which also prompted a lockout of nearby Travis Elementary School.

UPDATE, June 4: It was a report of shots fired that prompted the "lock out" of Travis Elementary School in central El Paso on Thursday, but police said in an update to the media on Friday that no one was injured in the shooting.

A brief statement from police also indicated no arrests had been made in the incident. No further details were offered by authorities.

ORIGINAL REPORT, June 3: EL PASO, Texas -- A shooting in central El Paso on Thursday afternoon prompted the "lock out" of a nearby school.

The doors at Travis Elementary School were locked so that no one could enter the building, according to an El Paso Independent School District spokesman.

In addition, all outdoor activities were moved indoors. The spokesman said classes continued as usual.

EPISD officials said they made the decision to implement a "lock out" after being notified by police about the shooting around noon in the 3800 block of Johnson Avenue, where officers had erected yellow crime scene tape.

Details of the shooting, including whether there were any injuries or arrests, weren't immediately available.

El Paso police officials didn't respond to requests for further information about the incident.
