Man who died in crash on McCombs was not wearing seatbelt, police say

Update (January 20, 2026): El Paso Police say that Arnoldo Vargas, 31, is dead after the crash on McCombs in the Northeast Friday night.

Investigators say that Vargas was traveling south on McCombs, but failed to stay in his lane. Investigators say that Vargas crossed the raised median and entered the northbound lanes. Officials say that Vargas' car hit another car head-on. Investigators say that the other driver was unable to swerve in time. Officials add that a five-year-old child was in the other car at the time of the crash.

Vargas was injured and rushed to the hospital. Police were notified of his death the next day.

Police officials say that Vargas was not wearing a seatbelt and that this contributed to his death.

This is the second traffic fatality of the year, compared with three this time last year.


Update (10:16 AM): The crash was reported at 9:25 p.m. El Paso Fire reports that one person received serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

No word yet on what caused the crash.


EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A two-vehicle crash in Northeast El Paso resulted in "serious injuries," according to an El Paso Police Department spokesperson.

It happened at the intersection of McCombs St. and Sweetwater Dr. in Northeast El Paso.

ABC-7 asked police how many people were injured and if they were taken to the hospital. We have not recieved a response.
