A murderous romance or a frame job? Things to know about Boston’s Karen Read murder trial

By MICHAEL CASEY

BOSTON (AP) — The trial of a woman accused of striking her Boston police officer boyfriend with her SUV and leaving him for dead in a snowbank has finished its seventh week. Karen Read has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the January 2022 death of John O’Keefe. Prosecutors say she dropped him off at the home of a fellow officer after a night of drinking and struck him while making a three-point turn. They say she then drove away. Her defense team argues that she has been framed. This week’s testimony was dominated by the lead investigator, whose credibility was undercut by offensive and sexist texts that he wrote about Read.
