YUMA, Arizona -- U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered a 12-year-old boy and his sisters, ages 8 and 6, wandering in the Arizona desert after having just crossed the border from Mexico hours earlier, KVIA sister-station KYMA reported.

Agents discovered the trio by themselves near the Morelos Dam near Yuma on Wednesday afternoon. The children were identified as Honduran.

Border Patrol agents said one of the girls had a paper taped to her with phone numbers on it.

They were taken into custody and transported to the Yuma Border Patrol station for processing.

Yuma's area of responsibility is located in the southeast corner of Arizona and is comprised of approximately 181,670 square miles of primarily desert terrain securing 126 miles of U.S. border from the Imperial Sand Dunes in California to the Yuma-Pima County line.
