Ysleta ISD extends school closure indefinitely due to stay-at-home virus order
EL PASO, Texas -- The Ysleta Independent School District became at least the third school system in El Paso County to extend the closure of its schools indefinitely due to the county's recent stay-at-home directive to stave off the spread of coronavirus.
Ysleta now joins El Paso ISD and Canutillo ISD in launching online learning to replace classroom attendance.
"Given the current circumstances surrounding COVID-19’s impact on our community, Ysleta Independent School District students and staff will not return to school on Monday, April 6, as previously planned. Instead, Ysleta ISD will launch THEDISTRICT@Home online learning program for students on April 6 with support from teachers and principals," said a statement from the district issued late Friday afternoon.
YISD Superintendent Xavier De La Torre said he would continue to consult with health and county officials before determining a future return date for students.
In the meantime, he said the district's teachers are planning lessons and contacting students to prepare for online coursework beginning April 6. De La Torre said the website www.yisd.net had been set up as a resource for students and their parents.
YISD will also continue providing students with take-home lunches that can be picked up at “Grab & Go” sites at selected schools.
