70-year-old woman struck by pickup truck and killed while crossing street in El Paso’s Lower Valley

A 70-year-old El Paso woman was struck and by a pickup truck and killed in El Paso’s Lower Valley on Sunday afternoon.

Police said Maria Margarita Garcia was crossing at the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Ysleta Lane around 4 p.m. when she was hit by a car driven by 75-year-old Israel Garcia Montez.

Initially officers had said Garcia was seriously injured, but later confirmed that she died from her injuries.

A statement released by police traffic investigators on Monday outlined what they believe happened.

“Mr. Montez was stopped at the traffic light waiting to turn left. Ms. Garcia was at the same intersection on the southwest side of the intersection waiting for the same signal light. Once Mr. Montez’s traffic light turned green he proceeded through the intersection making a left turn. Ms. Garcia also began to cross Alameda in the crosswalk. Mr. Montez’s vehicle struck Ms. Garcia in the intersection,” the police report indicated.

Detectives said the incident remained under investigation and there was no word on whether Montez might face any charges. It was the 41st fatality of the year, according to police who said there were 47 deaths at this same time last year.
