EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- An El Paso firefighter who had responded to an accident scene was struck by a vehicle on Transmountain at Paseo Del Norte Wednesday morning in what police said was a hit-and-run.

A spokesman for the fire department told ABC-7 that the firefighter was in stable condition and was being moved to the ICU, after being taken to the hospital initially in critical condition with serious injuries.

El Paso police officials said they were looking for a black pickup truck - or possibly an SUV - with windshield damage that left the scene after hitting the firefighter.

Authorities shut down the westbound lanes of Transmountain for much of the morning as they investigated the incident. The road fully reopened just before midday.

The roads were covered with snow and visibility was limited on Transmountain at the time the firefighter was struck. Our ABC-7 Stormtrack weather team issued a First Alert to warn drivers about the changing conditions.
