El Pasoans Fighting Hunger breaks records feeding the Borderland during pandemic
EL PASO, Texas -- Karmela Galicia, the program director with El Pasoans Fighting Hunger, has seen record numbers of El Pasoans needing food help through the first half of the year.
"Every day we are seeing over 6,000 families that are receiving food and on April 29th we actually distributed to 6,920 families," said Galicia.
The local food bank has seen surges at all of their food pantries across the Borderland, and the lines for food are staggering.
Galicia told ABC-7 that since March 19, they have fed over 182,000 people.
With new restrictions for social distancing and an effort to fight the spread of Covid-19, El Pasoan's Fighting Hunger are now having people wait in their vehicles and then drive through when they are next in line.
Some El Pasoans couldn't believe they were in a position that a local food pantry would be the only way they could feed their families.
"Truthfully this is the last place I thought I would have ever been," said food recipient Juan Jurado. "Things are a little bit low with food at the house. Sometimes it's a little bit difficult and a neighbor told me about this, so I decided to come in. This is my first day."
