Mayor Leeser won’t commit to audit of El Paso’s vaccine process during his 1st news conference
EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser, during his first solo news conference Monday afternoon at City Hall, touted vaccination success in El Paso despite complaints from some residents about confusion and difficulties in getting appointments.
At the news conference, Lesser wouldn't commit to supporting calls for an audit of the city's vaccination efforts.
The mayor maintained El Paso must be doing something right given that its vaccination rate to date is higher than both the state and national averages.
"We're doing what is mandated by the CDC, we're doing what is mandated by the federal government. And we'll continue to do that," Leeser said.
ABC-7 then asked: "So no audit is needed, is that what you're saying?" and Leeser replied: "Right now, I feel that we are very efficient, we'll continue to be very efficient. We'll continue to do what we're mandated by the federal government and the CDC."
But Dora Aaxaca, the chairwoman for the El Paso County Democratic Party, reiterated her call for an audit once again on Monday.
"Our goal is to improve the vaccine process, by asking for internal reviews. They need to commit to create a centralized vaccine registration process to include demographics of those vaccinated to ensure our priority groups are being served," she told ABC-7.
