Tips to help beat inflation as gas prices soar across the Borderland

MGN Online

EL PASO, Texas -- Almost everything is going through a price hike, especially gas. The average price of gas in El Paso County went up almost 40 cents during the week.

Everyone's wallets is taking a hit with inflation still up by about eight percent according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Here are a couple tips to keep in mind to help you save, courtesy of FirstLight Federal Credit Union.

If you have to drive around, look into grouping errands to save fuel costs instead of driving around town.

Try to avoid food waste and if you see any deals of food at the store, stock up on some of those pantry staples.

The bank says the most common concern they're hearing from customers is how long prices stay high.

"Make sure that you (pay) yourself," said Paulette Murguia with FirstLight, "So every time that you get your paycheck, make sure that you set up a 10% and save that amount of money. Also set up a budget for yourself and make sure that you stick to it."

Here are some more tips courtesy of Triple AAA to help you save money at the pump:

  • Slow down and drive the speed limit.
  • Avoid “jackrabbit” starts and hard accelerations.
  • Use cruise control on the highway to help maintain a constant speed and save fuel. However, don't use cruise control on slippery roads
  • Try to minimize your use of air conditioning.
  • Maintain your car, especially tires.
