Just 3 new virus cases each in Doña Ana County, Otero Prison as New Mexico nears 10,000 infections
SANTA FE, New Mexico — New Mexico health officials on Tuesday reported 88 new coronavirus cases and seven additional deaths statewide.
State officials said testing has now confirmed 9,933 cases. A total of 447 New Mexico residents have died of the virus.
In southern New Mexico, Dona Ana County experienced just three new cases to raise the county's total to 659. It ranks fourth in the state for cases, behind McKinley, San Juan and Bernalillo — all of which have 1,700 cases or more.
New cases were also reported Tuesday at a troubled southern New Mexico correctional facility, as three additional inmates being held at the Orero County Prison were found to be infected. That brings the total infections at facility to 573.
Meantime, a new order issued in response to the continuing pandemic requires that criminal plea agreements and civil settlements agreements be filed in New Mexico's state court system at least five days before trials are scheduled to start.
An order by Supreme Court Chief Justice Judith Nakamura says the deadline will help protect the health of safety of prospective jurors and others who otherwise would gather in courthouses in anticipation of a trial starting.
The order comes as the court system resumes holding trials and says the five-day requirement takes effect July 1.
