Union Pacific freight train derails 50 cars near Lordsburg

LORDSBURG, New Mexico -- A Union Pacific freight train derailed Monday near Lordsburg with approximately 50 rail cars overturned.

The derailment location was adjacent to Interstate 10 in Separ, which is about 21 miles southeast of Lordsburg.

Crews worked throughout the day trying to clear the tracks, as the 4:30 a.m. derailment resulted in all train traffic through the area being halted in both directions.

There were no reports of injuries and Union Pacific officials said the derailment's cause was under investigation.
