Gail Hill fire 108 acres, 25% contained
Update (March 21, 2025): The fire is now 25% contained. It is estimated to be impacting 108 acres.
Update (March 20, 2025): The Gail Fire is now at 238 acres and 10% containment. Communities were placed back to "Set" status, down from "Go" status. Today crews are working to secure interior hot spots. They hope to raise containment by the end of their shift today.
MAYHILL, New Mexico (KVIA) -- The Gail Hill fire, happening next to Mayhill, New Mexico, is now estimated to be 235 acres. Officials with the New Mexico Forestry Division state the wildfire is currently 0% contained. Mayhill is located on the edge of the Lincoln National Forest, east of Cloudcroft.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It was first discovered at 3:21 PM Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Crews with the Forestry Division, Smokey Bear, Silver City and Sacramento Hotshots, Lincoln National Forest, volunteer fire departments fought the fire into the evening and overnight, officials say. About 100 personnel members are estimated to be fighting the fire. Officials say there is a threat to structures.
"They made good progress using hand line and dozers to create the beginnings of containment," a Forestry Division spokesperson explained Wednesday. "Today, crews will continue constructing and enhancing fire line and mopping up around structures. Additional resources are still arriving. GPS will be used to gain more accuracy on the fire’s acreage."
