Man dies in El Paso Police custody after being tased at northeast gas station

EL PASO, Texas -- A 36-year-old man died in police custody Monday morning after he was tased outside a northeast El Paso gas station. The Crimes Against Persons unit is investigating, according to El Paso Police.

A spokesperson for the department said police responded to a welfare check just after 12:30 a.m. at a 7 Eleven gas station located on the 5800 block of Dyer.

When officers arrived, the man was acting erratic and "off." The man then became combative with police which lead officers to pull out their taser, striking him.

He was put under arrest and placed inside a police vehicle. Officers later noticed he was unresponsive. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

It's unclear how long it took for officer to notice he was unresponsive once he was placed under arrest.

Four officers have been placed on administrative leave as a result of this incident.

No other information has been released.
