2 dead, 8 others injured after overnight crash of suspected smuggling attempt in Santa Teresa
UPDATE (2:02 p.m.) The driver of a suspected human smuggling vehicle sped away from U.S. Border Patrol Agents Sunday night, causing a rollover crash with multiple injuries, according to the U.S. Border Patrol officials.
Eight people were in the car, two died on the scene, and the others were taken to the hospital.
U.S. Border Patrol officials say it happened around 10:50 p.m. when agents from the Santa Teresa Station saw a car suspected of human smuggling at the intersection of Strauss and Pete Domenici Highway.
Officials say the agents activated emergency lights, which prompted the driver to speed off and lose control.
The incident is under investigation by several local and federal agencies.
UPDATE: (7:43 a.m.) A driver lost control of the car and hit a barrier causing the deadly crash, Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart confirmed with ABC-7.
Sheriff Stewart said Border Patrol also responded the crash. She said she was advised the crash was not a result of a Border Patrol pursuit.
The identities of the victims have not be released.
SANTA TERESA, New Mexico (KVIA) -- Sunland Park Fire Officials are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that took place Monday morning in Santa Teresa.
Officials say it happened along Pete Domenici Highway just after 11 p.m. Sunland Park Fire confirmed two men died.
Eight other passengers, who were also all men, were taken to local hospitals. Two of those injured are in critical condition. They were airlifted to University Medical Center.
Sunland Park Fire and emergency medical services responded to a deadly accident.
Pete Domenici Highway is closed in both directions between McNutt and Airport.
Doña Ana County Sheriff's deputies are also on scene.
No other information has been released.
