‘Rust’ Shooting: Prosecutors to announce today whether charges will be filed

SANTA FE, New Mexico-- A decision on whether any charges will be filed in the 2021 fatal shooting on the New Mexico set of Alec Baldwin's film "Rust" will be revealed today.

Santa Fe First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies and special prosecutor Andrea Reeb will announce their decision at 9 a.m. in a written statement shared with media, their office said.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on October 2021 during a rehearsal for a scene in the movie filmed near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Director Joel Souza was also hurt in the incident.

Actor and Producer Alec Baldwin was holding the  gun fired on the set of the western film.

Baldwin has described the killing of Hutchins as a “tragic accident.” He has sought to clear his name by suing people involved in handling and supplying the loaded gun that was handed to him on set. Baldwin, also a co-producer on “Rust,” said he was told the gun was safe.

The District Attorney's announcement comes after the family of Hutchins reached a settlement in its wrongful death lawsuit against the film's producers, including Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC, in October.
