Officials set to suspend commercial operations Friday at Bridge of the Americas
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Commercial Operations at the Bridge of the Americas will be temporarily closed Friday, April 14, to allow for the processing of a migrant influx in the El Paso sector, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman.
The closure will remain until further notice. According to a Border Patrol spokesman, as of 2 p.m. today, as many as 1,200 migrants who crossed the river were taken into custody. The migrants keep coming, and a final tally ends at midnight. That figure comes on top of yesterday's tally of 1,500 migrants for the day.
Multiple agencies, including HSI, El Paso Sheriff's and others, are working to help process the migrants. The number is prompting officials to move migrants to other sectors, including Brownsville and Nogales, Arizona, to be processed.
CBP's Office of Field Operations will discuss contingency plans with stakeholders.
