Former President Jimmy Carter dead at 100

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Former United States President Jimmy Carter, a Noble Prize winner, died Sunday at the age of 100, according to Reuters.

Carter entered hospice two years ago, after several hospital stays, according to The Carter Center. Carter made the decision to spend time with his family and receive hospice care.

Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in rural South Georgia. During World War II he went to the U.S. Naval Academy pursuing a career as a Cold War Naval officer. He reached the rank of Lieutenant before returning to Georgia to take over the family peanut business.

Carter entered politics and was Governor of Georgia for one term and was the country's 39th president from 1977 to 1981. He was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980.

During his campaign as the Democratic nominee in 1976, Carter visited El Paso. He greeted supporters at the El Paso International Airport with the mayors of El Paso and Juarez in attendance at the campaign stop.

After leaving the White House, Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity from 1984 to 2020, according to Habitat for Humanity.

Rosalynn Carter founded The Carter Center, a nonprofit organization monitored international elections, addressing diseases in developing countries, and working towards world peace.

The former president and his wife Rosalynn were married for more than 75 years. Rosalynn Carter died at age 96 in November of 2023.

The Camp David Accords in 1979 became a highlight of Carter's presidency. Carter negotiated a peace treaty with Egypt and Israel, ending more than 30 years of war between the countries,

Also, in 1979 the U.S. Embassy in Iran was attacked and several staff taken hostage. The White House was unable to negotiate their release during Carter's presidency. They were later release during Reagan's inauguration.

On October 1, 2024, Carter turned 100 becoming the first president to reach such a milestone.
