UK police say 4 people died following an explosion at a waste water treatment plant near southwest city of Bristol

Andrew Cuomo

LONDON (AP) — British police say four people have died following an explosion in a silo that holds treated biosolids at a wastewater treatment plant near the southwest England city of Bristol. A local police chief said three Wessex Water employees and one contractor died in Thursday’s incident and investigators are not treating it as terror-related. The chief says a fifth person was injured during the explosion in the industrial area of Avonmouth. The explosion took place in a silo holding organic matter from sewage before it “is recycled to land as an organic soil conditioner.” The police chief would not speculate on the cause of the blast but says it didn’t pose any ongoing safety hazards.
