Ivan Melendez’s Division I single-season home run record in jeopardy

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Last season the Hispanic Titanic, otherwise known as Ivan Melendez made history in the Division I BBCOR era by hitting 32 home runs in a single season.

That record though is sitting on thin ice. Cam Fisher from Charlotte notched his 29th and 30th home run of the season on Saturday. Fisher is now two homers behind tying Melendez's record and three from setting a new one.

Fisher though might run out of time. The 49ers on Saturday advanced to the C-USA Championship game after defeating MTSU 12-9 and 9-8. They will play DBU at 12 p.m. on Sunday in the Championship game.

A win there will see them advance to the Regionals where Fisher could continue his quest for the home run record, unless of course he manages 3 home runs in their game against DBU tomorrow.

Melendez took top spot from Kris Bryant who hit 31 home runs in 2013 with San Diego. The BBCOR era began in 2011.
