Caught on video: Semi-truck runs off I-10 and crashes under a Las Cruces overpass
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A tractor-trailer rig ran off Interstate 10 and crashed under an overpass in Las Cruces on Tuesday, with the entire incident being captured on a nearby hotel's surveillance camera. (You can watch the footage in the video player at the top of this article.)
Dave Patel provided ABC-7 with a copy of the 14-second video clip that shows the semi-truck plunging off I-10 eastbound near milepost 140 and landing on Avenida de Mesilla beneath the bridge.
New Mexico Dept. of Transportation officials said the underpass at Avenida de Mesilla finally reopened to traffic as of 8:15 p.m. after being completely closed throughout the day as crews worked to clear the wreckage and police investigated. Portions of I-10 east were also closed at times for removal of debris.
Eyewitness Larry Watson told ABC-7 that he saw the Mesilla Valley Transportation tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on I-10. The loaded truck traveled between the two overpasses and went down onto Avenida de Mesilla, he said, indicating it went from the top of the overpass to the street.
The eyewitness account was similar to initial findings by New Mexico State Police investigators, who said it appeared the truck "left the roadway, entered the median, struck a camera light pole in the median, and rolled near an overpass bridge."
Police said the 68-year-old truck driver was injured and taken by ambulance to a local hospital following the crash, but there was no further word on his condition.
