TxDOT asks for patience as it works to finish Mesa Street work in west El Paso
EL PASO, Texas -- The Texas Department of Transportation's GO-10 project is now in its final phases.
During the I-10 shutdown, traffic was diverted to Mesa Street.
The problem is that road was not built to handle freeway traffic and this caused the street to break apart, needing to be redone.
Construction began before the Covid-19 shutdown, but the workers were considered essential so progress continued.
Almost three months later and the work is still going, which has frustrated many business owners along Mesa Street because the construction has blocked access to their shops.
“When they say it's time to open, it's hard to get the customers who can't get into my place,” exclaimed Nada Aziz the owner of Como's Italian Restaurant .
Sunny, of Sunny's Sushi, who opened her restaurant on the west side right before the virus pandemic can't seem to catch a break.
“We try open this month, but you know, last month but the street that happened nobody come and go here. So it's really hard,” she said.
Jennifer Wright of TxDOT said she understands the business owners frustrations and asks that they just remain patient.
“This is necessary work that we are endeavoring to get done as quickly as possible with the least bit disruption possible,” she explained.
Wright also talked about additional work “starting on Monday night, (when) we will begin on the second segment that is southbound from Sunland Park to Festival."
TxDOT officials told ABC-7 that by the end of June 2020 they hope to be finished with the outside lanes that are blocking businesses along Mesa Street, and then begin the construction on the inside lanes of the road.
Wright said that if anyone has questions regarding the construction that TxDOT can be reached by email at elpasoinfo@txdot.gov.
