Drunk driving blamed for car going wrong way on I-10 in El Paso resulting in deadly bus crash

UPDATE, May 10: Investigators said Monday that drunk driving was to blame for wrong-way car that crashed head-on into a Greyhound bus over the weekend along 1-10 east between Executive and Sunland Park.

The intoxicated car driver, identified by police as 23–year old Alan Ray Harrawood of El Paso, was the lone fatality. His death was the 23rd traffic death of the year on El Paso roadways.

Police said 15 of the 30 passengers on board the Greyhound, along with the bus driver, were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. However, one passenger was critically injured; police identified that crash victim as a 73-year-old man from Tucson, Arizona.

ORIGINAL REPORT, May 8: EL PASO, Texas -- A car headed the wrong way collided head-on with a Greyhound bus along Interstate 10 in west El Paso early Saturday - killing the car's driver and leaving three others critically injured, police confirmed.

An ABC-7 viewer captured video of the Ford Mustang going the wrong direction along I-10 eastbound near Executive Center just moments before the crash occurred nearby. You can watch it in the video player below.

In all, fire department officials said 11 people hurt in the crash were taken to hospitals, while others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Authorities summoned police traffic investigators just before 3 a.m. to the crash site, where it appeared that the car caught fire after impact.

"(The) Mustang was traveling the wrong way, west in the eastbound lanes (and) went head-on into (the) Greyhound bus," police said in an afternoon statement from investigators.

Police said the Mustang driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were transported to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Officers didn't indicate whether the severely-injured trio were passengers in the car or on the bus.

The bus had an estimated 30 people aboard it, fire officials said. Another bus was brought in by Greyhound to transport those who weren't injured onward to their destinations from the crash site.

The freeway was shut down from Sunland Park to Executive due to the crash investigation and authorities had expected it to reopen sometime Saturday afternoon; for the latest traffic conditions visit kvia.com/traffic.
