El Pasoan jailed on $500k bond in Santa Teresa man’s hit & run death

UPDATE, May 17: A motorist was being held Monday on $500,000 bond after a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run the prior night in west El Paso.

Police said 25–year-old Alberto Escobar of El Paso was charged with accident involving death after he allegedly struck 29 –year-old Aristide John Freddi of Santa Teresa, New Mexico with his SUV.

Freddi was hit about 9 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Montecillo Boulevard.

"According to witnesses, Freddi was stumbling and appeared intoxicated. Freddi reportedly fell into the outside lane of the roadway and was run over by a GMC Envoy," police wrote in an incident report. "Escobar continued traveling southwest on Montecillo, making no attempt to stop and render aid."

Freddi was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. Escobar was later identified by police as the fleeing driver and taken into custody.

Freddi's death was the 25th El Paso traffic fatality so far this year, police indicated.

ORIGINAL REPORT, May 16: EL PASO, Texas -- A pedestrian was struck and seriously hurt by a hit-and-run driver on El Paso's westside Sunday night.

Traffic investigators were summoned to the area of Monticello and Castellano just before 10 p.m.

Authorities said the car fled the scene after hitting the pedestrian, who was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.

Police did not provide a description of the vehicle being sought in the hit-and-run case and no further details were immediately available.
