Leeser pushes TxDOT to finish Mesa road work by September due to complaints

EL PASO, Texas -- Construction along Mesa Street is now slated for completion by the end of September following a meeting between El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser and state transportation officials over complaints about the project.

Leeser said Thursday that his meeting with officials from the Texas Department of Transportation was prompted by a "multitude" of "valid concerns including remaining bumps and jolts on vehicles."

As of Thursday, TxDOT said the ongoing roadwork was 60% completed. The mayor said the agency agreed to the following timeline for the remainder of the project:

  • Intermediate pavement completion by the end of this week
  • 3 weeks for last northbound segment with an intermediate layer of asphalt
  • 4 to 6 weeks for the work on the intersections
  • 4 weeks for utility work
  • Final diamond grinding to provide a smoother ride
  • Placement of the final 23,400 tons of surface mix
  • Expected completion by the end of September

In a statement, the mayor indicated he was "very pleased with the response from TxDOT and their willingness to accelerate their work as best they could, without compromising on the final product."

Leesor also emphasized the need for patience among the public, saying "projects of this magnitude take time." He called Mesa Street "an important thoroughfare" and said the rehab project underway was "critical" to complete.
