18-year-old man dies after falling out of moving pickup truck in Lower Valley

UPDATE, June 7: An 18-year-old El Paso man who fell out of a pickup truck over the weekend was the city's 30th traffic death of the year, police said Monday.

Officers identified the victim as 18-year-old Juan Valverde.

Investigators said he stood up in the bed of the pickup while it was making a turn at the intersection of Yermoland and Duskin in the Lower Valley on Saturday evening.

"Valverde lost his balance and fell out of the truck striking his head on the pavement," a police incident report indicated. He suffered critical injuries and later died at a local hospital.

The incident was initially reported as a crash, but the police report reflects that no collision occurred.

ORIGINAL REPORT, June 5: EL PASO, Texas — A man was critically injured in a car crash Saturday evening in El Paso’s Lower Valley.

Traffic investigators were summoned to the crash site at Yermoland and Duskin around 5:30 p.m.

Police said the man hurt in the collision was transported to a local hospital with what they described as life-threatening injuries.

There were no other injuries reported and authorities had no further details about the crash immediately available.
