Victims ID’d in deadly U.S. 54 crash that led to charges against Juarez bus driver
UPDATE, Dec. 13: Investigators on Monday identified a woman killed and a man seriously injured in a bus and car crash over the weekend that police blamed on distracted driving.
Police said 51 year-old Jacqueline Yvette Sheffield of northeast El Paso died in that wreck, while 57-year-old Charles Edward Bullard of northeast El Paso remained hospitalized in critical condition.
Both were in the car that was struck by a Los Paisanos bus on U.S. 54. The bus driver, 52-year-old Guadalupe Alonso Maciel of Ciudad Juarez, is charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault for allegedly crashing into the car while looking at his cell phone instead of the roadway.
UPDATE, Dec. 12: Authorities on Sunday charged a Los Paisanos bus driver with manslaughter and aggravated assault for a deadly Saturday night crash that investigators blamed on distracted driving.
52-year-old Guadalupe Alonso Maciel of Ciudad Juarez was being held in the El Paso County jail on $275,000 bond by order of Magistrate Judge Jon Joseph.
El Paso police said witnesses indicated the bus driver was looking down at his cell phone and failed to notice a stalled pickup truck with its emergency flashers on along U.S. 54 and crashed the bus into it Saturday night.
A woman passenger in the pickup died and the 57-year-old man who was driving the pickup was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Their names weren't released by police.
ORIGINAL REPORT, Dec. 11: EL PASO, Texas -- One person was dead and another was seriously injured after a tour bus crashed into a car along U.S. Highway 54 in northeast El Paso on Saturday night.
The deadly collision happened around 7:30 p.m. on the Patriot Highway (U.S. 54) northbound near Fred Wilson (exit 23).
Police summoned traffic investigators to the scene to determine how the crash happened. But a manager on scene for the bus company, Los Paisanos Autobuses, told ABC-7 that the car had stopped along the highway for an unknown reason and the bus was apparently unable to avoid hitting it.
First-responders extricated one victim from the car and rushed that person to a local hospital in serious condition. Another individual remained trapped inside the car and police later indicated that person had died; an ABC-7 photographer at the scene also observed a white sheet covering the vehicle vehicle.
There were no injuries to anyone on the bus, which was headed for Kansas City.
U.S. 54 northbound was shutdown by police and all traffic was being directed to exit at Fort Bliss/Cassidy.
