EL PASO, Texas -- A Heat Advisory was in effect for Thursday through Saturday for much of the Borderland as high temperatures were set to be in the triple-digits each afternoon through the three-day stretch.

El Paso's temperature reached 104 on Thursday afternoon, ten degrees higher than normal for this time of year. But it still fell several degrees shy of the date's record high of 107 in 2014.

Thursday marked El Paso's 5th triple-digit day of the year thus far; last year there were 47 total triple-digit days with 106 being the hottest.

While Thursday was hot, ABC-7 chief meteorologist 'Doppler' Dave Speelman said Friday could be the hottest day of 2020 so far.

"Temps will likely hit between 103 to 110 across the El Paso area, including southern New Mexico," he predicted.

The National Weather Service in its Heat Advisory urged that "precautions must be taken to limit exposure to this heat."

It warned of the potential for heat-related illnesses, a threat which ABC-7 weather forecaster Nicole Gomez advised Borderland residents should take seriously.

"Keep in mind that prolonged exposure to hot temperatures can cause heat exhaustion. The symptoms can include heavy sweating, rapid pulse or heart rate, nausea, fatigue, or headache," she said. "If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, get into the shade or air conditioning, and drink lots of water."

With it hot and getting hotter, 'Doppler' Dave said relief would be on the way once the Borderland makes it through the weekend.

"Some cooling comes early next week," he said, "as temps will cool down behind a cold front."
