EL PASO, Texas -- A man who crashed his car and then began walking along Transmountain Road was struck and killed early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Police on Monday identified the victim as 35-year-old Benjamin Hardin of El Paso. His death happened at Transmountain near Resler around 4 a.m. Sunday.

When the crash happened Sunday, police had told the media that the man struck was seriously injured. However, police on Monday indicated he actually was dead at the scene.

Investigators said Hardin crashed his car into a road sign and it became disabled. He then got out of the car and was walking along the road when he was struck.

Hardin's death was the 14th traffic fatality of the year, according to police data, compared to a half-dozen at this same time last year.
