City of Juarez plans to employ migrants staying at local shelters
JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) -- With more migrants arriving at the border and filling local city shelters, Juarez authorities are looking for a plan to employ those staying in the shelters.
Santiago González, the city's Director of Human Rights, told ABC-7 his department is looking for a labor insertion project for migrants. But it will need a new department to work with this new idea.
Director Gonzalez also said it could be complicated because it's not only hiring migrants at maquiladoras, but other places to work as well.
But they must ensure transportation for their own safety and bring them back to the shelters.
"We need to be sure that any migrant being employed or getting support from the government will not be asking for money on the streets or doing something else."
Migrants will also need to issue work permits in Mexico and businesses will have to register them through the National Institute of Migration.
