New Library Computer System Requires Card For Access

EL PASO, TX – El Paso Public Library officials will implement major changes that will affect the way area residents utilize the branch’s computer system.

All area residents who wish to use the computer system at any library will need a library card to sign on to the new PC management system beginning Monday, September 10. The new system will automate the process of signing up and using a computer and will automatically track the time a person is on the system and help manage printing from the computers.

The new system will allow parents and guardians to set age limitations on their children’s internet use and filter out undesirable sites. In order to request a filtered internet session, parents will need to submit an updated Internet Permission Form. Parents wishing to request filtered internet sessions for their children will need to request it as soon as possible because all sessions will remain unfiltered until parents make the request, officials said.

According to library officials, patrons will not be denied access to the computer system if they do not have a card or do not want one. Visitors from outside the area will be issued temporary guest passes to use the system. However, the new system will be easier to use if a library card is used to gain access, officials added.

Library cards can be obtained at any El Paso Public Library facility and are free to residents of El Paso and Dona Ana counties and residents of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Parents must accompany any children younger than 14 years of age.
