Border Patrol Agents Accused Of Assault
FABENS, TX. – Two border patrol agents accused of assault make an appearance in Federal Court this morning. The alleged assault is said to have happened back in February but was not known by border patrol officials until March 19th.
In February, two border patrol agents assigned to the Fabens port of entry encountered a person trying to smuggle drugs into the United States.
The first agent accused is 29-year-old Jose Alonso Compean. He has spent five years as a border patrol agent and is now suspended without pay, as they wait the outcome of this Federal case. He is being held on a $15,000 bond.
The second is 36-year-old Ignacio Ramos. Ramos has worked for the Border Patrol for the last nine years. He too is suspended without pay and is being held on a $35,000 dollar bond. Ramos was ordered to remove all weapons from inside his home and was also ordered to attend anger-management classes.
Ramos’s attorney asked the judge if an anger management class taken by Ramos within the last two years could be applied – the judge said pre-trial services would have to make that decision.
Both Compean and Ignacio remain at the el paso county detention center. Once they make bond both men will be required to wear monitoring bracelets – but since there is a shortage they probably won’t be outifitted with one until monday – until then they’ll be on the honor system.
