2 DASO deputies crash with vehicle, 1 man dies from injuries
Update (November 6, 2024): New Mexico State Police released the following statement about the crash.
"On November 4, 2023, at around 6:40 p.m., New Mexico State Police responded to a 2-vehicle crash with injuries on I-25 southbound near mile post 5.
The initial investigation indicated a 2022 Hyundai SUV, driven by a 57-year-old female, was traveling northbound on I25 when she decided to turn around in the median and head southbound.
A Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Deputy (DASO) vehicle occupied by 2 deputies, was traveling southbound with emergency lights and sirens activated. For unknown reasons, the Hyundai pulled out in front of the deputy, causing the deputy to rear end the Hyundai.
Ismael Misquez, (67), a passenger in the Hyundai was transported to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The 57-year-old female driver of the Hyundai was also transported to an area hospital where her condition is unknown.
The DASO deputies were transported to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries. Seatbelts were utilized in this crash.
This crash is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police with assistance from the New Mexico State Police Vehicular Crimes Unit."
Las Cruces, NEW MEXICO (KVIA) -- Dona Ana County Sherriff's Office (DASO) deputies were dispatched to a call in the Las Alturas area on November 4th, 2024 at about 6:26 p.m. DASO says the call involved an injury to a child, therefore they responded with all emergency equipment activated. While in route southbound I-25, a vehicle traveling at a significantly slower speed pulled out onto the freeway in front of the deputy’s vehicles.
There were two deputies in the unit which collided with the slower moving vehicle. Both deputies and the female driver were transported to local hospitals for treatment, but did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. The male passenger was unresponsive at the scene and later died at the hospital. New Mexico State Police are handling the accident investigation.
