El Paso’s Spur 601 Expressway Now Fully Operational
The state’s largest “pass through” project is in the Sun City. El Paso’s new Liberty Expressway, or – Spur 601 – is now fully operational.
It connects loop 375 in east El Paso to U-S 54 in the Northeast.
“Pass through” means the road will be paid for by the state based on the vehicle miles traveled on the highway.
City and state officials started planning the $383 million project in 2006 as a way to prepare for thousands of new soldiers and their families coming to Fort Bliss.
“In 2005, there were 9,000. By 2014, there will be 34,000. If you also take family members and civilian personnel, that’s 100,000 people that are on Fort Bliss at any given time, ” said Mayor John Cook.
The project took five years to complete.
