Impact from Kansas St. closure downtown

Kansas Street is now closed to traffic from Main Drive to Texas Avenue in Downtown El Paso. Crews have placed appropriate signage, barricades, and detour notices.

As part of the closure, Mills Avenue is also closed to eastbound and westbound traffic at Kansas.

After meeting with contractors and impacted business owners, the plan for access to the Wells Fargo Plaza Parking Garage has been updated.

Motorists accessing the garage should head north on Campbell, turn left on Mills, and access the garage via a small stretch Kansas Street which will be maintained for garage access only.

Kansas Street carries tens of thousands of vehicles a day from Interstate 10 to downtown destinations including El Paso City Hall, the El Paso County Courthouse, and the Federal Courthouse. Motorists who use Kansas Street are advised to expect delays and follow all marked detours. Additionally, they are encouraged to consider the following alternate routes:

Westbound traffic can exit I-10 at Cotton Street and access Downtown via Texas Avenue.

Eastbound traffic can exit I-10 at Downtown and turn right at Santa Fe, Oregon, or Mesa Street.

During all closures, appropriate traffic control measures will be in place in impacted areas. Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists should also allow additional time to travel in these areas and are asked to observe all signs, barricades, and detours.

The CRRMA is tasked with constructing the project, using $97 million in Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) funding and a design provided by The City of El Paso (City).

Once operational, the City’s Mass Transit Department (Sun Metro) will operate and maintain the Streetcars and associated facilities. The CRRMA will place track over a 4.8-mile route, adding 27 stops and a maintenance and storage facility.

The route will be serviced by Presidents’ Conference Committee (PCCs) streetcar vehicles – the same vehicles that ran on El Paso streets until 1974. The route runs in two loops, connecting the international bridges, retail areas, government buildings, convention center and downtown ballpark with the medical center, University of Texas at El Paso and several historic neighborhoods.
