Officer hurt in multi-vehicle crash identified
The investigation continues into a crash that left four people injured, including a police officer with life-threatening injuries. This happened Thursday afternoon on the 1500 block of Lee Trevino in east El Paso.
El Paso Police identified the nine-year veteran injured as Officer David Ortiz, assigned to the Pebble Hill Regional Command Center.
Investigators determined that Ortiz was stopped at a traffic light on a 2004 Harley Davidson, along with a 2006 Acura and a 1976 Chevy Pickup. That’s when a 2006 Kia driven by a 45-year-old man struck the back of Officer Ortiz’s Police Motorcycle. The crash caused the officer to fall off his motorcycle, along with causing a chain reaction. The Kia also struck the Acura, driven by 41-year old Carmen Hernandez, which then struck the Chevy Pickup, driven by 51-year old Raul Licio.
Because of the crash, the Kia caught fire. The unidentified driver of the Kia was taken to Del Sol Medical Center.
Officer Ortiz was taken to Del Sol with life-threatening injuries. He is currently in critical condition.
Hernandez, the driver of the Acura, and her passenger 21-year old Angela Jasmin were taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries.
