Good Morning El Paso: YISD moves forward with CATCH program

results of a program at the ysleta school district meant to keep children healthy and active. abc-7 first told you about the “catch program” la september. phase one is a success– now the district is moving forward. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live with the details…denise? it looks like yisd is catching on.. phase two means the program will be implemented in nearly 40 schools– reaching more than 18-thousand students. the catch program aims to increase physical activity, healthy eating and reduce obesity. it’s funded through a grant from blue cross blue shield of texas. ascarate elementary is one of 14 schools where the catch program has been tested out. even p-e classes are increasing the amount physical activities. since the implentation of catch– staff wellness teams to spearhead new ideas– training for teachers and staff– daily messages to students about making healthier choices. an ascarate p-e coach says he wants students to take these lessons home: “to strategize differen things… keeping healthy habits” an evaluation shows a 53 percent increase in the amount of p-e class time that students are actually doing moderate to vigorous physical activity compared to last year. we’ll talk about how the school is also involving parents. a building ridge of high pressure aloft will keep plenty of sunshine around
