Migrant students encouraged to reach college

The UTEP COllege of Education and Upward Bound brought migrant students from Canutillo Middle together Saturday morning to learn how to get into college.

“This event is really to reach out a student population that is a vulnerable student population in schools,” said Reynaldo Reyes, the Upward Bound Director

Students from Upward Bound, a program that helps students get ready for college, taught the kids not how to apply to college, but how to do well in high school and succeed in the future.

“They made the whole process of going to college, that far away dream, a reality,” said Sergio Nogami, the Upward Bound Student President.

He and other speakers told the students no obstacle was too big if they followed their passions and worked hard. It was a message the kids themselves wanted to share with others

“People should study hard and get good grades so they can have better jobs in the future,” said Luis Carlos Vela, one of the Canutillo students who was in the program Saturday.

If you know someone who would benefit from Upward Bound or would like to help out they can contact Professor Reyes at 915-747-8817 or at rreyes9@utep.edu
