Wienerschnitzel leaves UTEP-area location, sort of
Wienerschnitzel has joined a number of restaurants that left or closed their Mesa Street locations.
The Wienerschnitzel located near UTEP at the corner of Mesa Street and Kerbey Avenue is now an Original Hamburger Stand.
The two restaurants are sister companies, and if you look closely, there are still traces of Wienerschnitzel, including the walk-up menu. In fact, the Original Hamburger Stand offers many of the same items on the Wienerschnitzel menu.
However, the iconic, red-and yellow cathedral-style restaurant commonly associated with Wienerschnitzel is now Hamburger Stand blue.
This is not the first Hamburger Stand in El Paso, but the location at 8953 Dyer St. has since closed.
According to Business Journal, poorly performing Wienerschnitzel locations in Denver were replaced with the Original Hamburger Stands in 2013.
A local Wienerschnitzel manager told ABC-7 the Dyer location experienced some success, and owners hope a change at the UTEP location will boost sales.
The Charcoaler Drive-In, a popular burger joint located farther north on Mesa Street, announced this week it will close after 55 years in business. The last day to get a Charcoaler burger or frankfurter is Jan. 31.
