EPISD board reviews Centering Program for young moms
Tuesday the El Paso Independent School District got an update to a program they began more than year ago.
The district’s College, Career & Technology Academy partnered up with Texas Tech Health and Sciences Center to help young moms enrolled in school get health care.
OBGYN Professor Sireesha Reddy — who is involved in the Centering program tells ABC-7 30 percent of the moms who enrolled in the program hadn’t seen a doctor, they missed labs, sonograms and pre natal care.
This is how the program helps young mothers.
The program provides healthcare services at the school. Which means they don’t have to leave campus and miss classes.
Moms also receive one-on-one consultations with a doctor. They also take part in health related educational group sessions which helps the young mothers share life experiences.
“It’s a special niche for these girls. They are separated from the school, they are already dealing with the challenges of the pregnancy in a separate environment so it’s a safety issue as well as a comfort,” said CCTA Principle Adan Lopez.
The Centering program has already helped more than 100 young moms get their education back on track and the program is expected to continue and help mothers to be.
